Celebrating and Supporting Diversity in North Dakota with Strengthen ND

September 17, 2024

North Dakota is known for its vast landscapes, rich history, and tight-knit communities. But there’s another story unfolding here—one of diversity and inclusion. As Strengthen ND, we are proud to be part of this movement, championing efforts to celebrate and support diversity across the state. Here’s how we are making a difference:

1. Creative Community Solutions Grants

The Creative Community Solutions grantmaking program is a flexible initiative that invests in innovative ideas and the people who drive them. These grants fund projects that have the potential to make North Dakota a better place for everyone, regardless of background. By supporting a wide range of issue areas, this program helps foster a more inclusive and diverse community.

Why it Matters:

Investing in diverse ideas and leaders ensures that solutions are holistic and representative of the entire North Dakota community. This not only addresses current issues but also sets a foundation for more inclusive growth in the future.

2. Community-Centered AmeriCorps Program

Through the Community-Centered AmeriCorps program, we can help local organizations by providing individuals to build community capacity. These AmeriCorps members work on projects that promote diversity and inclusion, ensuring that all voices are heard and represented in community development efforts.

Why it Matters:

By incorporating diverse perspectives into community projects, AmeriCorps members help create solutions that are more equitable and effective.

3. Change Network North Dakota

The Change Network is a year-long program designed to equip individuals with the skills and networks needed to make their workplaces and communities more inclusive. Participants learn about inclusive leadership, cultural competency, and strategic planning, empowering them to drive change within their own spheres of influence.

Why it Matters:

Training leaders in inclusivity ensures that diversity becomes a core value within organizations and communities, fostering environments where everyone can thrive.

4. Strong Farm Incubator Program

In collaboration with Stoll Farms and Baldwin Greenhouse & Nursery, Strengthen ND offers the Strong Farm Incubator program. This initiative provides affordable access to land, infrastructure, and training for aspiring farmers, many of whom come from diverse backgrounds. This program not only supports economic development but also promotes cultural diversity in North Dakota’s agricultural sector.

Why it Matters:

Agriculture is a significant part of North Dakota’s identity. By supporting farmers from diverse backgrounds, this program enriches the state’s agricultural landscape and promotes cultural exchange.

5. Becoming an AmeriCorps Host Site

Non-profit organizations and local government entities in North Dakota can become Strengthen ND AmeriCorps Host Sites. These sites can request AmeriCorps members to serve in rural capacity-building roles, helping to implement projects that emphasize diversity and inclusion.

Why it Matters:

Empowering local organizations to prioritize diversity ensures that efforts to promote inclusivity are sustainable and deeply rooted in the community.

6. Bush Prize for Community Innovation

In partnership with the Bush Foundation, Strengthen ND administers the Bush Prize, which celebrates organizations known for their successful community problem-solving. The flexibility of Bush Prize grants allows awardees to invest in ways that best support their ongoing work, including projects that enhance diversity and inclusion.

Why it Matters:

Recognizing and funding organizations that excel in community problem-solving encourages innovation and inclusive practices, setting a standard for others to follow.

Strengthen ND is committed to creating a more inclusive North Dakota. By investing in diverse ideas, supporting community capacity building, and recognizing innovative leaders, they are fostering a state where everyone can thrive.
